I don’t always Karaoke, but whenever I do it’s definitely going to be at Otani Japanese Restaurant! This is usually the first place I think of whenever I’m feeling bored! The food is pretty good from what I’ve had (I’ve only had the sushi and and handful of other appetizers). My personal favorite is the Alaska Roll and the Dragon Roll, because I like Salmon and Japanese BBQ eel. I would also recommend the Beef Negimaki for all of you meat eaters and the Fried Oyster (I loved the fried oyster and the sauce is even more amazing!).
Rick Honda is a pretty awesome guy who is both courteous and admirable.
Most of Otani’s food is on the pricier side (sushi in general is ridiculously overpriced, even at the grocery store), but Otani’s prices are reasonable and competitive without sacrificing quality. Unfortunately I am unable to make a fair and objective review of the dining experience (mainly sticking to bar food), because I’m usually having the food during Otani’s bar and karaoke hours; the last time I actually sat down for dinner was far too long ago to remember, but judging from Otani’s Facebook posts, it seems like they have a decent happy hour special with very good prices (you will have to LIKE the Otani Sushi Facebook page to find out more). The main aspect of Otani Japanese Restaurant I am reviewing is their crazy Karaoke nights, and as karaoke bars go, Otani certainly is the best in Columbus!
A typical Friday or Saturday Night at Otani; the bar is crowded
The thing that I admire most about Otani is the fact that they always have good looking girls there! All their servers are also gung ho about working there and are super friendly. They all seem to have a type of energy and optimistic vibe that I’ve never seen at any other restaurant. Otani staff are also usually all good karaoke singers, so you will certainly be entertained!
As for the bar, Otani has a decent selection of wine and liquor, which means they are able to make you a lot of mixed drinks if you ask. Unfortunately, their beer selection is a bit to be desired (they do have all the Japanese beers if you’re into that kind of thing, but not much else besides the basics). I usually just go for a simple Bud Light on draft (like I said, the beer list is basic), not because Japanese beer tastes bad, it just has less calories than a Kirin! Hot sake is also a nice option, and since they have both beer and sake, you might as well just make it a sake bomb!
Whether you’re in the mood for sushi or in the mood to sing karaoke, you will definitely have an enjoyable and fun experience at Otani Karaoke! You may not be able to get more than one or two songs in, but what do you expect? There are other people waiting their turns too!
